The Samsung jitterbug phone is a wonderful device. Many people my age are intimidated by electronics, and with good reason. They can be difficult to see, difficult to hear, and generally not designed with seniors in mind. When my daughter first told me that I should get a cell phone, I laughed. I knew that I should have one in case of an emergency, but I just didn’t think that I would be able to use one. For my birthday I was surprised to find that despite my objections, my daughter went ahead and got me a cell phone. There are no unnecessary buttons, only the usual digits as well as a YES and NO buttons. And the buttons are large and easy to read as well, so I don’t have to worry about hitting the wrong number when I dial. There’s a light on the keyboard as well so I’m able to use the phone at night. If I ever have the need to make a call in the middle of the night, it’s comforting to know that I’ll be able to use the phone without having to get up to turn on the lights.

The most important feature for me is the speaker. It’s loud and clear. I never have to ask the person on the other line to repeat what they said, and they can hear me just as clearly. I originally had intended to only to use the phone in emergencies, but it’s so convenient and such a delight to use that I rarely use my home phone. I have a 90 year old father who likes his freedom to go places with his friends and to walk around parks and public places freely. I often go my way looking while he goes another. The only way I can get peace of mind doing this is if I have a way to connect with each other if we need to.

I tried giving him a regular cell phone to use, but he had great difficulty with it. The numbers on the phone were too small and he did not have the manual dexterity punch in the numbers.

The screen was too small for him to read the numbers I already programmed in for him and he could hardly hear when the phone rang. His friends have had to help him dial and talk on the phone for him. Jitterbug phones for seniors is just in simple words “The best of both worlds”- Modern style and design coupled with child like simplicity of a pick and talk phone. Yet highlighting any of the best features would be like choosing between your left eye and your right eye if someone were to ask you “If ever you were to lose one eye, which one would you like (?) To lose”.

Of course no one would ask this silly question, as much as I would like to answer this choice out of the best of both worlds. Jitterbug phones are unique, “Out of the World” and a big boon to seniors. All the same the two best features I would like to select are

1. The One-Touch Jitterbug Facility where you could either make a call to your loved one by just the click of only one button. Since the Monitor which is a bright screen with big bold fonts are easily visible to the seniors, they would have the choice of either pressing the “Operator” button and requesting them to make a call, or as soon as you open the phone the screen pops up with the Phone book screen, where you only need to scroll up or down to reach the number of your choice, and then either press yes to call or no to close the call. Easier still if you just want to close the call, just close the phone. If you desire operator assistance then again you have a one-touch button where the operator will assist you with any number of your choice. Of course your normal dial button options are readily available, but I would still go for the Jitterbug OneTouch.


2. The second option or Feature I liked was the outstanding feature of having a 911-button right there on your phone. I do agree, and only hope that our seniors never require this facility, but this one is just too unique. Be it assistance for themselves or for others a One-touch 911 dial button is one thing that any senior will appreciate. Normally any senior or for that matter anyone will panic and forget even the most basic number for an emergency facility. But here you have just one button to press and the message goes straight through. And even in the extreme case of the senior not able to speak out or be able to express him/herself, 911 are trained and efficient enough to handle calls of this nature. Oh, praises to the person who invented the jitterbug phone! There isn’t any other cell phone on the market today that I would even consider buying! Cell phones have always been a mystery to me and far too confusing. This cell phone was definitely created for people like me who are technologically impaired. It’s simplicity in design and use goes way over the top and they have plans for as low as $14.99 a month. Just perfect for those of us on a budget! I sure don’t need the fancy “extras” that other cell phones have, so the jitterbug cell phone does what I simply want it to do.

It’s as simple as calling from your own home. The price is very reasonable at around $150.00, and I personally prefer the $14.99 a month fee for 50 minutes. It keeps me on track to maintain a budget. Another added feature of this phone is that there is no long term contracts with some huge fee to cancel as there is on other cell phones. This cell phone is a great safety feature to carry in your car. Although this cell phone is geared for senior citizens, I can’t see why it isn’t a good idea for a teen as well. I have been thinking of purchasing one for one of my grandchildren, too. An operator is always available to help you with your calls, although I find this is not necessary.


Verizon has come out with such a marvelous product at such a reasonable price that I recommend this cell phone to anyone that is as confused as I am about the normally hard to understand cell phones. The large buttons are easy on the eyes and fingers. What other cell phone could offer what we really need in a cell phone? All I need is to be able to call for help if needed or tell someone where I am at the moment, and this is what this cell phone offers plus easy, convenient features at a low cost.
